If you don’t like the idea of leaving your dog at home or with friends while you are on holiday, you might consider taking it with you and booking with an airliner that is pet-friendly. To that end, you need to know which ones are considered as the best ones. There are many airlines which advertised them as pet-friendly, but the case is different, in reality.
The list here includes only the trusted pet-friendly airlines to help you on your next excursion. The following list is based on reviews and opinions gathered from people that flew with their pets at in the last six months.
1. Allegiant Air
They allow for passengers to bring their cat or dog as long as they can be fitted in cabin placed below the seat in front. The cabin is soft, leak-proof, and pretty convenient for the pets. The downside is that there is a restriction for destinations from and to Alaska or Hawaii.
When you make the reservation make sure that you check the “travel with pets” option. That privilege will cost you $100 per pet, and you can take up to two pets with you. There is an exception for emotional support animal and service animals. For both cases, the standard “pet policy” does not apply.
2. Hawaiian Airlines
Dogs, as well as cats and household birds, are allowed in the passenger cabin, or if they are checked as baggage. The fee for traveling within the state of Hawaii is $60 and from Hawaii to any place in North America is $225.
Same as with Allegiant Air, the pet needs to fit in one of their carriers and placed underneath the seat in front of you. They too have a pet exemption policy for service and emotional support dogs.
3. JetBlue Airways
They are well known for their JetPaws program that not only supports people traveling with pets but also offers certain incentives for the people that do that. The program provides a list of tips on how to travel with a pet, special bag designed to be attached to the pet’s carrier during the check-in, and 300 loyalty points.
Only one pet can fly with one passenger. Ensure that you plan your travel in advance, as the airline only allows four pets per flight (not individually). The booking can be done both by phone and online and the fee is set at $100.
4. Delta Airlines
Delta’s pet-friendly policy is well known to pet owners. Dogs, cats, and other pets can travel together with their owners for a fee that starts from $75 and can go up to $200, based on the destination. Your furry friends need to fit into the given kennel that is fitted under the seat in front of you. The airline also allows your pets to travel as cargo. Your pet will be comfortable in this specialized area as it is pressurized and temperature-controlled.
If your pet weighs more than 20 pounds, then it won’t be allowed in the cabin area. Aside from the size of the pet, there is a restriction to the age of the pet. No pet younger than ten weeks is allowed to travel with Delta Airlines.
American Airlines is considered to be one of the most pet-friendly airlines in the world, providing multiple travel choices based on the size and breed of your pet. Pets can be transported via American Airlines Cargo or as carry-on luggage. However, keep in mind that certain breeds are not allowed to travel with this airliner. That is why you need to call them first and confirm if your furry friend is not on that list.
Traveling with your pet is charged per kennel. The fee is based on the travel destinations:
- $125 per kennel for destinations between USA, Central America, Canada, Colombia, Caribbean, and Mexico.
- $150 per kennel for traveling to and from Brazil.
- $200 per kennel for destinations between USA, South and Central America, Mexico, Caribbean, and Canada.
